RADIv1: a non-steady-state early diagenetic model for ocean sediments in Julia and MATLAB/GNU Octave

Abstract. We introduce a time-dependent, one-dimensional model of early diagenesis that we term RADI, an acronym accounting for the main processes included in model: chemical reactions, advection, molecular and bio-diffusion, bio-irrigation. RADI is targeted study deep-sea sediments, particular those containing calcium carbonates (CaCO3). combines CaCO3 dissolution driven by organic matter degradation with diffusive boundary layer integrates state-of-the-art parameterizations kinetics seawater, thus serving as link between mechanistic surface reaction modeling global-scale biogeochemical models. also includes precipitation, providing continuum precipitation. components rather than individual species accessibility straightforward to compare against measurements. first diagenetic implemented Julia, high-performance programming language free open source, it available MATLAB/GNU Octave. Here, describe scientific background behind its implementations. Following this, evaluate performance three selected locations explore other potential applications, such influence tides seasonality on deep ocean. powerful tool time-transient steady-state response sedimentary system environmental perturbation, mining, deoxygenation, or acidification events.
